Señor Blues, Mister Sunday

Here's a little session I published for my spanish blog at
http://lacomunidad.elpais.com/masajazz It's an ecclectic almost randmon selection of blues fueled tracks who got together on Sunday morning while I was mind clicking tunes who drive you to other tunes, while looking at an unsually cold and grey sky in Madrid. Feeling more feline that my cat Mingus.

EXCHANGE BUREAU Fresh for the future

For those of us hungry for fresh and sharp sounds the news coming from Detroit are juicy. It has been some weeks now since I found out about a group of artists under the initials E.B. I'm referring to Exchange Bureau, a definite new name to keep in mind for anyone interested in deep funk, eclectic house and future soul. The collective and label under Exchange Bureau gathers some of the Detroit talents not connected to techno-only sounds. The origins of this digital label are the band itself (EB) where Joshua Adams and Paul Katcher, in tight collaboration with artists like El-Mahdi Obeid, Mike Leonard, Jared Sykes, Omar Taji, Michael Scamardella, Jason Alder and Mark Szymanski, have been shaking up a fusion of electronic and soul tastes to produce projects like their own album "Via Air Mail". Strong funk with microchips for warm hearts.

But if this wasn't enough Paul and Joshua decided to expand the family more with a new label, based on electronic releases (the sin of the times) but firmly believing in the global potential of individual projects coming from EB's band members, remixing other material (there's the tandem The British Knights) and looking to the future with a clear message: there's more than meets the ear in Detroit.

For all of us, geographically away from Detroit, it's a blessing to be able to receive such young spirited and diverse combo of jazz, soul, house, hip-hop and jazz. They have already involved the minds of Daz-I-Kue, John Arnold, or Paul Randolph for upcoming works due this year. So, click them nice and slow at their site, and spend some time browsing the many for-stream songs available. And before you leave, for you download-junkies grab one (¿all?) six mixes and sessions at hand from Joshua Adams, Exchange Bureau, Snowman Jack, Ibex, and Dj Godfather.

Welcome to music global warming.

JIMI TENOR & KABU KABU // 4th Dimension

As the offer and access to new music grows in a strange combination of democracy and chaos, quaility and delight becomes essential. Yes, you can have almost everything these days, but what is the benefit of all that when detail and  inspiration belongs (still) to only a few artists? It's the beginning of a new year and I must confess one of my resolutions: I will not listen to the sound of the sirens (in my head). Only to my heart. And how does one translate this commitment to music? Easy: selection, selection, selection. And I can't think of a better example to express it that the arrival of a new set of music by the extraordinaire Jimi Tenor.

Although his new project with Kabu Kabu (4th dimension) got to my desk a few weeks ago, the official launch of the album by Sahko Recordings is announced for January 19th (while you can already order the music in CD and LP through the label's site: www.sahkorecordings.com). An order you should put on the top your priorities: new and fresh music by one of today's most sharp composers. A true genius in his own right thanks to an incisive mix of pop attitude, avant-garde mind and global heart.

Tenor's second excursion into his own afrodelia (after 2007's Joystone) is a warm explosion of spiritual jazz, cosmic soul, abstract swing and freako-croonerism! But the best lies on top: humor. So dip yourself into this mothership of space soul, twisted funk and retro science fiction for a real trip to your mind. 14 tracks that bring new details on and on while the most important quality detector lights its sign: a big big smile. A must for 2009!
